Krabi river anchorage

N7.31.778 E99.06.229

The Krabi River anchorage is a convenient stop for stocking up on fresh supplies and some good f&b options in Krabi Town.

It is very tidal and be wary of the depth and mud flats. Anchor in 4m high tide, mud. Room for about 4 boats plus there is room further out in the river if this area is full or you wish for somewhere quieter.

The channel is shallow and best entered on a rising tide.

We were here during the Covid19 lockdown and many places were closed. It was pleasing to see that some were re-opening during the time we anchored in the river during July 2020.

Dock your dinghy at the water police dock opposite Port Takola’s entrance

The offices are a bit spread out and require a dinghy and some walking, grab taxi-ing or hire a scooter, see map below.

I’ve marked the offices on the map. Custom’s house is in town near the river front. Immigration and Harbourmaster are close to Port Takola on the opposite side of the river.

Dinghy access

There are a few jettys along the riverfront. The yachties tend to use the most northern one near the Mud Crab Statue. This is also the closest one to the morning market. Try to keep out of the way of the longtails who use the jetty also.

Markets

The morning market here is superb. Best visited early. Open daily. Fruit, vegetables, seafood, chicken, pork and beef available and there is a busy little food court like area.

There are several small evening markets close to the river front with street food stalls also.

Other supplies

There is a Mother Marche nearby. Tesco, Big C and Makro require a grab taxi.

If you’ve broken your phone or tablet there is a shop behind the night market that can help. Poh speaks good english and is really helpful.

Oil, and other fluids: Pongsak Tractors.

Electrical bits: southern end of the main drag, eastern side of the road.

F&B

Booze Bar along the river front was our favourite. Chilled atmosphere, good music and friendly staff.
The River Bar offers a yourself a chance to admire your boat while slurping on a frothy.
Roti: Minor language barrier here but they do a good roti and curry.
Dimsum: Pick from the bamboo steamers or choose from the menu. Gets busy after 9am.
Thai: Several good thai places around. We enjoyed: Baitoey Seafood with a view over to the river.
Japanese: near the night market is a nice japanese restaurant.

Things to see and do

We were there post Covid19 lockdown and many National Parks and local attractions were still closed. For a bit of culture we took ourselves to the street and admired the street art and sculptures.

Transport

Krabi Airport is close. Grab taxis are available. If you are hanging around a few days hire a scooter from Rose and Jeff. They’ll most likely deliver it to you and offer great rates.
