10m, mooring

Moorings are available from Secret Island Resort. We used a mooring from here and the marina and had issues with both with boats swinging close to each other at slack water.

For shopping and other entertainment check out the land lubbing section.

snorkelling

We were at Gili Gede when the earthquake struck Lombok in August 2018. The island suffered no significant structural damage although the tourists have fleed leaving an island dependent on tourism a little worse for wear. We can attest to the fact the island is still very much in business and hoping for the tourists to return. The island is a long way from Mt Rinjani and the risk of tsunami is very slight due to the surrounding islands and reefs. Gili Gede maintains it’s small island charm amidst a boom in hotel development. There are 5 villages dotted about the island and besides a few scooters, is unmotorised. We have visited Gili Gede twice and spent some time here each time.

Things to do at Gili Gede

Eat and Drink

There are numerous eating and drinking venues on Gili Gede from high end to warungs. The cost of the dish does not reflect the quality of the meal by any means. We enjoyed:

  • Hula Hoop: order the tapas tongkol and olah olah. Local style dishes of mackerel and a vegetable and coconut curry.
  • Pelangi Homestay: the noodle soup, fried chicken and excellent ice lemon tea made this a favourite.
  • Thamarind: Daily specials to be enjoyed with cold bintang and sea views.
  • Palmyra: south of the moorings on the mainland, is a easy to reach restaurant. Try the tuna tartare.

Soon to be opened is the Gilan Cottage. Located by the jetty/marina this will be a fabulous place to enjoy a beer on the large deck jutting out over the reef and amongst the mangroves.
